American Tribal Style Belly Dance® -  ATS® - is a modern style of dance created by FatChanceBellyDance® director, Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman. It is a distinctly American invention, which incorporates elements from Middle Eastern, Spanish, North African, and Indian classical dance in a group improvisational format. ATS® is known for the elaborate costumes, fancy steps, and sheer beauty of women dancing together.

Less well known to the observer is that the dance is anchored in formations and cues. The leader stands to the left, and the followers keep their attention trained on the leader, watching for the cue for the next step. The movements can be slow and sinuous, or fast and exhilarating! The lead changes throughout the dance, and it is pure joy to see women working together in cooperation, presenting the dance as one entity.

ATS® has become a worldwide phenomenon, with Sister Studios on every continent except Antarctica, and in more than 22 countries!

This class will cover Classic ATS® movements such as taxeem, hand floreos, arm undulations, introduction to Egyptian, Arabic, Shimmy, and Pivot Bump steps, as well as the history of ATS®, proper posture, and a Gratitude Meditation. You will need to bring finger cymbals (zils) or purchase them separately by week 3. ($12, available in class) As the classes continue, we will cover Modern ATS® steps as well.

Please wear comfortable clothing such as yoga or exercise pants, and a form fitting top so that I can assess your posture. No outdoor shoes are allowed in Shine, but you may wear soft soled dance shoes such as ballet flats, or dance in bare feet.
